Yep. For every person that subscribes to the warm happy jesus image, there will be someone else who decides that god has told them to take the bible literally. Until christianity becomes another dead religion like Greek mythology, this possibility will always exist. Thank you for the comment. Like your blog, by the way.

The fundamental problem with scriptural dogmatic religiosity like Christianity is that while many of the followers want to be as mediocre and median as possible, they must carry with them the baggage of their written dogma. They drag the Bible with them as they go through their lives, acting with actual compassion in some cases that their own scriptures disagree with, and promoting the Bible into the next generation.

Except that there’s no promise that the future communities will take that compassion, or enlightened morality with them, they might decide to get back to fundamentals by actually reading the text that they exalt.

And in that text they’ll find as much reason to subjugate women, enslave their neighbors, and murder nonbelievers.

So it’s part of their cultural history; but really, must they tote it along with them like so much toxic baggage and then refuse to take responsibility for when it can and does become the basis for horrible misdeeds, all promoted and spelled-out for a different generation who may choose to backtrack.

We shouldn’t glorify our immoral past except as a reminder not to go back.
